Some dentists prefer to warm a composite material prior to placement. When compared to a composite used at room temperature, a prewarmed composite can have many advantages: easier to extrude, improved flow, enhanced adaptation, decreased microleakage, increased hardness, and reduced curing time, according to a study in the International Journal of Oral Health and Medical Research. In addition, warming an anesthetic prior to injection has been shown to improve patient comfort. With Dentazon’s latest invention, the C-Warmer Blue Anesthetic/Composite Warmer, dentists can conveniently warm anesthetic and composite in one location.

Hoping to improve the flowability of composite and to lessen the discomfort of anesthetic injections, Dr. Frank Glushefski was happy to test the C-Warmer dental composite warmer for this DPS evaluation.  During his trial, Dr. Glushefski discovered that heated composite and anesthetic allowed for more comfortable injections and far more workable composite. Dr. Eric Van Zytveld agreed and conveyed, “The C-Warmer warms composite to improve its flow and warms anesthetic for increased patient comfort.”

Ease of Operation/Design of Unit
Designed to accommodate a variety of differentsized cartridges, compules, or syringes, the C-Warmer Blue comes in 2 configurations, Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 has 9 slots—1 large slot (1.2 cm diameter) that can hold a compule dispenser gun or composite syringe, and 8 small slots (0.8 cm diameter) for anesthetic cartridges or compules. Type 2 has 7 slots—3 large and 4 small slots. Each evaluator tested both types.

Many dentists praised the C-Warmer Blue for its ease of operation and design, including Dr. David Ventker, who lauded its sleek design and ease of use. Other favorite features were its compact size, multiple slots, and clear cover. Calling it a very user-friendly device, Dr. David Buchina praised the versatility of different-sized ports to accommodate various-sized components. He added, “The compact, accessible controls and adjustable settings make the unit particularly amenable for everyday use.” When asked for suggestions for improvement, Dr. Andrew Achord recommended more slots for anesthetic, while Dr. Ventker suggested larger openings to fit various sizes of composite syringes. Commenting that the unit looks neat and professional, Dr. Andrew Mogelof said the C-Warmer Blue dental composite warmer was a positive addition to his practice.

Improved Flow of Material
According to Dentazon, the C-Warmer Blue warms composite material quickly, which improves its flow and significantly reduces curing time. For Dr. Glushefski, warming the composite resulted in “far more workable composite,” which enhanced flowability, increased workability, and improved the application of the composite when compared to nonwarmed material. In a difficult Class II restoration, Dr. David Martin reported that “the warmed composite flowed into the box and produced a dense smooth restoration.” Hoping that a warm composite would make it easier to place and manipulate without stickiness, Dr. Buchina found that the warmth resulted in effortless use. He explained, “The warm composite changed the viscosity, allowing quicker placement and ease of sculpting. It seemed to enhance finishing, providing quick achievement of an ultrafine surface.” Dr. Mogelof agreed that heated composite flows better around posts but remains viscous enough to shape, and Dr. Van Zytveld reported an improved ability to flow and adhere to deep cavity preparations.
Temperature and Patient Comfort
The temperature on the C-Warmer Blue can be adjusted by 1°C at a time, and there are 3 convenient preset options: low (30°C), medium (40°C), and high (50°C). “The temperature control works well and is easy to adjust,” shared Dr. Mogelof, adding, “The LED is easy to read and the cover helps keep the temperature stable.” Dr. Martin said it maintained a very constant temperature.

Hoping to improve upon the “uncomfortable feeling of anesthetic upon injection,” Dr. Glushefski was thrilled that a warm anesthetic offered more comfortable injections for his patients than room temperature material. “It met with rave reviews by patients,” he added. Dr. Daniel Florian agreed that a warm anesthetic resulted in “less injection pain.” Dr. Mogelof found that warming an anesthetic carpule produced faster onset of anesthesia when using it for blocks, and his patients reported less pressure with infiltrations. “The warmer for anesthetic in itself is worth having,” concluded Dr. Ventker.

Overall Satisfaction
All of the dentists who participated in this DPS evaluation said they would recommend the C-Warmer Blue anesthetic warmer to colleagues. Dr. Van Zytveld summed up his experience by saying, “The ability to easily adjust temperatures and to accommodate anesthetic cartridges and composite makes the C-Warmer Blue very useful.” Calling it a positive adjunct to both the patient and provider, Dr. Buchina concluded, “I found this device remarkable in its simplicity, design, and function. It had a significant impact on the everyday clinical routine.”
