An evaluator from Peekskill, NY, who has been in practice for 29 years, summed up his evaluation of Kerr’s OptiBond XTR by saying, “Great adhesive; easy to use!” This same evaluator said he would definitely purchase it in the future and recommend it to colleagues.
Kerr describes OptiBond XTR as the only bonding agent that combines the power and durability of a total-etch adhesive with the ease of use of a self-etch technique.
The 15 dentists who participated in the Dental Product Shopper evaluation of OptiBond XTR rated and commented on several product features, including postoperative sensitivity, product performance, and ease of use. They also weighed in on their overall satisfaction with the product and told us whether they would purchase it in the future and recommend it to their professional colleagues.
Postoperative Sensitivity
Manufacturer Description: The OptiBond XTR self-etch technique reduces postoperative sensitivity and aids in patient comfort.
Evaluator Feedback: Several evaluators noted that the lack of sensitivity reported by their patients was their favorite feature of the product. An evaluator from Lakewood, CO, said, “It has made me more confident about decreasing postop sensitivity.” This same evaluator said she found OptiBond XTR to be much better than similar products and that she would definitely purchase it in the future and recommend it to her colleagues.

Product Performance
Manufacturer Description: OptiBond XTR combines Kerr’s GPDM technology, ternary solvent system, filled adhesive, and optimized formulation for excellent adhesion in both direct and indirect procedures. Independent testing has demonstrated superior enamel and dentin bond strength.
Evaluator Feedback: The evaluators rated OptiBond XTR on its performance in both direct and indirect procedures. An evaluator who has been in practice for 5 years described the product as having “great bonding properties with composite.” All 15 evaluators rated product performance with direct restorations as excellent or very good, and 13 evaluators rated product performance with indirect restorations as excellent or very good.
Ease of Use
Manufacturer Description: OptiBond XTR is a true universal adhesive that can be used with both direct and indirect restorations, eliminating the need for multiple bonding agents.
Evaluator Feedback: Eight evaluators named ease of use as the feature they like best about OptiBond XTR, saying things like “simple to use,” and “easy no etch application,” as well as, “It is very easy to use.”
When asked what they would like to see improved about the product, a few of the evaluators noted the strong odor. One evaluator said he keeps the HVE running and as close as possible to minimize odor detection by patients. This same evaluator said he would definitely purchase OptiBond XTR in the future and recommend it to his colleagues.
Overall Satisfaction
Thirteen evaluators said they would definitely or probably recommend OptiBond XTR to their professional colleagues, and 11 said they would definitely or probably purchase it in the future. When asked to give their overall satisfaction rating for OptiBond XTR, 5 rated it as excellent, 8 rated it as very good, and 2 rated it as good. One evaluator said, “I really like this product. It is very easy to use.” Another evaluator commented, “I’ve made the decision to make OptiBond XTR my go-to bonding system.”
