Like most dentists, Dr. Lakisha Arif-Holmes, a general dentist in Wauwatosa, WI, is always searching for new tools and techniques to practice more efficient and effective dentistry. Recently she told DPS that she was “looking for a bur that would cut more effectively and efficiently,” especially during crown preparations. Komet USA came to her rescue with its extra-coarse diamond line, Deep Purple, designed for fast, effective substance removal, which leads to quicker procedures. “The burs are pretty aggressive and cut fast so your preps take a shorter amount of time,” Dr. Arif-Holmes announced after testing them for this DPS evaluation.

Deep Purple diamonds feature high-quality, uniformly sized, extra-coarse diamond grains embedded at the optimal depth for controlled and reliable performance during crown preparation procedures, according to Komet. Available in several shapes and in 4 sizes (1.6, 1.8, 2.1, & 2.3 mm diameter heads), each Deep Purple diamond has a matching, identically-shaped finishing bur to be used after the initial preparation. “I really like the fact that there is a corresponding finishing bur to help smooth the prep as well,” said Dr. Arif-Holmes.

Speed and Efficiency of Debris Removal
“The Deep Purple diamonds removed tooth structure cleanly and efficiently,” noted Dr. Jeremy Schell, who said the improved speed and removal of tooth structure helped decrease appointment time. “Patients were happy to not have to sit in the chair as long,” he added. Dr. Lawrence Brent called the diamonds “very powerful,” which allowed for quick reduction and said, “It is an excellent diamond for easy gross reduction.”

Calling it a superb product, Dr. Lourdes Calvo stated, “This diamond cut better than the average coarse diamond available in the market.” Dr. Jennifer Chiang, who would like to see a slightly shorter length bur, found that “the coarse grit prepped faster” and cut efficiently, which resulted in “greater appointment efficiency.” While Dr. Jacquelene Farnham said the diamonds did not remove tooth structure as quickly as she had hoped, Dr. Paul Chaiken said, “It reduced prep time which improves the experience of both the patient and doctor.”

Noting that the Deep Purple burs cut fast and clean, Dr. Michael Sicklick said he was able to minimize his inventory of burs and that the purple color was easy to distinguish from other burs. Dr. Kirk Melton mentioned that the coarse grit left deep scars in the dentin, which required finishing with a fine grit. After using a Deep Purple diamond, Komet recommends finishing the prep with the identically shaped finisher, which Komet provided to the evaluating dentists.

Durability and Longevity of Diamond
Designed with an extra-coarse grit and optimally embedded diamond grains, Deep Purple diamonds are made to last through several crown preparations. “I like that the diamond cut smoothly and was durable through preparations,” shared Dr. Calvo, who said she used it on approximately 10 patients for several individual crown preps and bridge abutments. Dr. Karyn Halpern said the Deep Purple diamonds are “strong and ultra-fast,” and she would highly recommend them to others. A dentist from Madison, WI said, “The diamond held up well and was able to be used for many crown preps before noticing any reduction in efficiency.”

Matching Finisher
To ensure consistent restorations, Komet sent the identically shaped finishing bur to each evaluator to be used after primary preparation with the Deep Purple diamond. Although the finishers were not officially part of the Deep Purple evaluation, the dentists appreciated how the combination of burs worked together. “[I like] the matching fine grit bur to smooth the prep and refine the margins at the end of the preparation process,” said the Madison dentist. Dr. Arif-Holmes pointed out that the corresponding finishing bur eliminates the need to search for an appropriate finishing bur in the catalogs. In addition to the matching finishers and diamonds, she recommended adding depth cutters to the lineup. “Following up with the red diamonds left a smooth prep that scanned nicely,” noted Dr. Schell.

Overall Satisfaction
Most of the dentists agreed they would recommend the diamonds to others, and Komet’s Deep Purple line earned a DPS Best Product rating. “The diamonds allow for fast and effective bulk removal,” shared Dr. Halpern, while Dr. Schell said his patients “did not complain of any post op sensitivity and the crowns fit beautifully.” Dr. Kristen Joyce found the diamonds to be very efficient when used with her electric handpieces. “They cut efficiently and the finishing burs make preps look much smoother,” she explained. “I will definitely switch to Komet Deep Purple Diamonds in my office.”
