Ultradent Universal Dentin Sealant provides immediate pain relief after scaling and root planing.
Ultradent Universal Dentin Sealant is a biocompatible, nonpolymerizable, highmolecular–weight resin. The manufacturer recommends the sealant for use in the treatment of transient root sensitivity. According to Ultradent, Universal Dentin Sealant provides immediate relief and is easy to apply. Ultradent recommends coating sensitive roots with Universal Dentin Sealant to seal tubules and reduce discomfort after root planing or heavy scaling. According to Ultradent, the sealant forms a virtually impenetrable barrier that remains for months after application.
Fourteen hygienists participated in this Dental Product Shopper evaluation of Ultradent Universal Dentin Sealant. They rated the sealant on several features, including ease of application, reduction of discomfort, and viscosity. They also provided feedback on whether they would recommend the sealant to their colleagues or purchase it themselves. In addition, the evaluator rated their overall satisfaction with the product.
Ease of Application
Ultradent describes Universal Dentin Sealant as easy to apply. The clinician paints the sealant onto the tooth surface and then allows it to dry. Twelve evaluators said that ease of application is very important when considering the purchase of a desensitizing agent. When asked to rate the ease of application of Ultradent Universal Dentin Sealant, 7 rated it as excellent, 6 rated it as very good, and 1 rated it as good. An evaluator from Elmira, OR, said, “I really liked the application brush; it made it very easy to apply and there was less waste.” This evaluator also said that she would definitely recommend the sealant to colleagues and purchase it in the future. Another evaluator said, “It went on easy and dried quickly.”
Reduction of Discomfort
According to the manufacturer, Ultradent Universal Dentin Sealant provides patients with immediate relief of pain and discomfort. Three evaluators rated the reduction of discomfort using Ultradent Universal Dentin Sealant, as reported by their patients, as excellent, 9 rated it as very good, and 2 rated it as good. An evaluator from Clark, NJ, with 21 years of experience, said, “Most patients said they felt less sensitivity after a couple of applications.” Another evaluator said, “My patients were very pleased with their results; they all stated that their sensitivity had improved after 1 application.” This evaluator continued, “I used it on myself and immediately noticed an improvement while drinking ice water.”
Some patients also provided feedback on the flavor of the sealant. Flavor was not included among the evaluation criteria, but several evaluators noted that their patients commented on the lack flavor as a positive attribute. An evaluator from Green Bay, WI, who has been in practice for 20 years, said, “One patient stated that there was no taste.” Another evaluator said she liked “the flavor—or should I say lack of flavor.” One evaluator did note that one of her patients found the taste to be somewhat bitter.
Viscosity
The evaluators were asked to rate the viscosity of Ultradent Universal Dentin Sealant. Four evaluators rated the sealant as excellent, 5 rated it as very good, 4 rated it as good, and 1 rated it as fair. When asked what she liked best about Ultradent Universal Dentin Sealant, an evaluator from Palos Heights, IL, said, “The viscosity. It was very easy to control, and it did not run all over.”
Overall Satisfaction
Twelve of the 15 evaluators said they would definitely or probably recommend Ultradent Universal Dentin Sealant to their colleagues, and 10 said they would definitely or probably purchase it in the future. When asked to give their overall satisfaction rating for Ultradent Universal Sealant, 6 evaluators rated it as excellent, 4 rated it as very good, and 4 rated it as good. An evaluator who gave the product an overall satisfaction rating of excellent, said, “This is an excellent product. It dried smooth, and patients seemed to have a reduction in sensitivity.” This evaluator also said that she would definitely recommend the sealant to colleagues and purchase it in the future.
