Dental Product Shopper enlisted a mix 11 dentists and hygienists to participate in the Safe+Mask TailorMade evaluation. They rated and commented on a number of features, such as comfort, breathability, fluid resistance, and more.
Seal and Fluid Resistance
Manufacturer Description: Safe+Mask TailorMade masks feature aluminum nose- and chin-pieces that create a comfortable but tight seal, reducing gapping and protecting the wearer with excellent coverage and fluid resistance.
Evaluator Feedback: One dentist would have preferred "tighter adaptation around the periphery." Of the 8 evaluators who identified the seal as the feature of the Safe+Mask TailorMade masks they liked best, 2 said it prevented fogging of glasses and loupes, 1 said the "extra wire below the chin allows for the reduction of gaps," and another reported that "the bendable part didn't wear out or lose its memory."
One hygienist "loved the seal around the bottom," adding, "It made me feel much more protected from fluids." Another hygienist "liked how it seals the bottom so fluids and aerosols can't fly up the mask. It walls off the bacteria but still leaves breathing room."
"The fit is better and I didn't have any reservations about fluid passing through," said 1 of the hygienist evaluators. Three evaluators suggested a mark to distinguish the top from the bottom of the mask, or to show which side faces out.
Comfort and Breathability
Manufacturer Description: Medicom's Safe+Mask TailorMade masks are made of a soft, non-woven material, with soft and stretchy earloop ties for maximum comfort. This material allows for excellent breathability, as well, allowing the clinician to perform without worrying about the mask on their face.
Evaluator Feedback: One evaluator found the earloops too tight. Another evaluator suggested the masks could use "a little padding on the bridge of the nose," though they reported "a very comfortable, tailor-made fit" of the mask. One dentist evaluator did not like the smell of the masks, and 1 of the hygienist evaluators thought the mask was "too hot when I snugged the mask down on the bridge of my nose and my chin."
A hygienist who practices in Florida who wears both a shield and mask, commented on the comfort of the mask, saying, "The mask is usually a 'chin warmer' since it's difficult to breathe with both, but once, I actually forgot I had the TailorMade on my nose." This same evaluator went on to rate their overall satisfaction with the Safe+Mask TailorMade masks as very good and said she would probably purchase the mask and recommend it to colleagues in the future.
Overall Satisfaction
Ten evaluators said they would definitely or probably purchase it and recommend it to colleagues. One dentist called the masks "more durable and sturdy than others," and another said they were "well received by staff."
A North Carolina hygienist said, "I had our assistants wear them and they all agreed that they felt safer with such a snug fit," Another hygienist reported, "Every team member who tried it liked the mask better than the ones we've been using. If the cost is similar, we've agreed to switch."
