Ease of Use
Manufacturer Description: Convenient preloaded take-home whitening trays can be worn right out of the package. Optimal gel quantity enables easy cleanup after whitening. Each whitening kit contains 10 treatments.
Evaluator Feedback: Citing features such as the pre-loaded trays, ease of use was rated as excellent or very good by all 13 evaluators, and was identified as the feature they liked most by 8. “The product is popular due to ease of use,” said an evaluator who rated the system as very good. When asked what she liked most, a dentist who rated the system as excellent said, “They are very convenient. I have a patient who wears them on the drive home from work every day.” The same evaluator added, “They’re also dummy-proof.”
Effectiveness
Manufacturer Description: Opalescence Go comes in 10% and 15% hydrogen peroxide formulations. The UltraFit tray’s superior molar-to-molar adaptation ensures that the maximum amount of gel stays in contact with the teeth—both anterior and posterior—during whitening.
Evaluator Feedback: Each evaluator selected 3 to 5 patients to take a kit home for daily use. Pretreatment VITA shade and photos (if possible) were then compared to post-treatment shade and photos at 2- to 4-week recall appointments. Of the 10 evaluators who rated effectiveness, 9 rated it as excellent or very good. One evaluator, who said she would definitely purchase and recommend the system to colleagues, said, “I feel the trays were a bit overextended and not really universal in size,” and another evaluator, who called the system much better than similar products, noted that, “The wax tray system is an ingenious way to get custom fit every time!”
Compliance
Manufacturer Description: Opalescence Go comes in mint, melon, and peach flavors. The whitening gel includes fluoride, as well as potassium nitrate. Patient compliance is maximized by the convenience of the preloaded trays, the comfortable fit provided by the unique tray material, and the reduced wear time (30 to 60 minutes for the 10% formulation and 15 to 20 minutes for the 15% formulation).
Evaluator Feedback: Patient compliance was rated as excellent or very good by 8 evaluators. A California dentist who said she would definitely purchase the system and recommend it to colleagues said, “All I had to say to patients is, ‘They are dental-grade whitening strips,’ and they were eager to try them out.” When asked what he liked most about the system, a New York dentist in practice for 25 years said, “[It’s] easy to use, so patient compliance is excellent.” When asked about potential improvement, 2 dentists reported some sensitivity, 1 of whom added, “as with all bleaching products.”
Overall Satisfaction
Overall satisfaction with Ultradent’s Opalescence Go was rated as excellent or very good by 11 evaluators, with 100% reporting that they would definitely or probably purchase the system and recommend it to their colleagues. One dentist described the system as, “the first product truly comparable to the leading product in the industry.”
