The Bonding and Beer podcast dives into the world of dental materials and craft brews, striving to promote excellence and progress in restorative dentistry with a fresh twist
Why is it important for dentists to know about the different bonding techniques? Dr. Rolando Nuñez, BISCO’s manager of clinical marketing, explores that question during an episode of his new podcast, Bonding and Beer. “Because I feel that there is a time to apply any of the existing bonding techniques, and I think that it's very important for a clinician to not only understand that, but also to know that they can be more versatile when it comes to using their bonding agents and using what I feel is the most appropriate technique.”
Providing a brief history of the total-, self-, and selective-etch techniques, Dr. Nuñez then explains what he views as the best clinical setting for each. Complete with pro tips—renamed “Ro Tips” for the podcast—he shares why selective etch works best for direct composite restorations; self-etch for a conventional crown prep; and how total etch "shines" when bonding a veneer.
A Beer-Infused Twist
True to its name, the podcast occasionally shifts focus to the beer of the day. After a few sips and some thoughtful analysis, Dr. Nuñez gives each brew a rating—like the 5.5 out of 5 he enthusiastically awarded to his favorite locally brewed IPA from Chicago.
Bonding and Beer launched this year with biweekly episodes covering topics such as how to avoid post-op sensitivity, what makes a material bioactive, silane applications, fiber posts, and much more.
“When the team at BISCO asked me if I would host a podcast talking about restorative dentistry, which is basically what I’d already been doing on my own social media outlets, I asked them, ‘Can I drink beer while I do it?’” Dr. Nuñez said. “After getting approval for that, the idea for the podcast just took off.”
Education Meets Entertainment
Discussing the episode’s themes, Dr. Nuñez— who has 25 years of practice experience in addition to the decade in his current role—said providing this type of content for members of the dental community supports a key element of BISCO’s mission: education. As an industry leader dedicated to understanding and improving adhesive dentistry, BISCO places tremendous value not only on manufacturing innovative, reliable, and award-winning restorative products, but also sharing its research and knowledge to benefit clinicians and their practices worldwide.
“Bonding and Beer feels a lot like other podcasts that are put together by regular people, providing this sense of relatability between the host and the audience,” Dr. Nuñez explained. “I just sit down at the mic with my beer and share the information I know and the life experiences I’ve had. This approach makes what I'm sharing easy to digest, while being both informative and entertaining.”
