Efficiency and Elegance

Rose gold DIAO burs enable faster, cleaner cuts with a diamond and pearl coating

By now, most dentists have adjusted to using 2 different burs depending on the task at hand. For example, diamond burs are ideal for quickly cutting through porcelain, zirconia, and enamel without chipping, while carbide burs are especially adept at cutting through metal. Imagine if there was a single bur that could tackle any restorative material and eliminate the back-and-forth between diamonds and carbides.

Timothy Bizga, DDS, FAGD, said that ever since he started using Komet’s innovative DIAO burs, this wishful thinking has become a reality. “I’ve already done many crown removals, crown and bridge cases, and various other types of restorative procedures using my DIAO burs,” he said. “I’ve yet to encounter a situation or substrate where this bur fails to achieve a clean, fresh cut.”

Durable Diamonds, Powerful Pearls

Introducing a next-generation cutting instrument, the DIAO burs are designed with diamonds and pearls, creating a concentrated power that ensures maximum control and precision. “They cut like a hot knife through butter, ripping through any material without frustration,” Dr. Bizga said. “DIAO burs cut extremely well and are very efficient. I really enjoy using them.”

According to Komet, DIAO burs are 27% sharper and have a 34% longer service life than competitors thanks to their ideal distribution of grits. Since less pressure is required for efficient cutting, the diamonds and pearls afford clinicians increased comfort and ease of use. The burs also have excellent durability and provide users greater control over the instrument.

“I was sectioning off a porcelain-fused-to-metal bridge and decided I was going to see it through with a good-size DIAO bur,” Dr. Bizga said. “It went right through both the porcelain and the metal very easily.”

Two common drawbacks of using diamond burs to cut through and shape metal restorations are their tendency to become dull quickly or to overheat. That said, 70% of practitioners who tested DIAO burs did not experience these issues.

“When I was rounding away the sharp edges, I didn’t even need to go back in with a finer-grit bur,” Dr. Bizga said. “I also found that the way the pearls were laid out achieved a polishing effect. The bur didn’t leave the heavy striations or markings on the prep that a normal coarse-grit diamond bur might have.”

A Standout Bur

Another notable differentiator of DIAO burs is their unique rose gold hue. “Most burs are silver with colored markings on them,” Dr. Bizga noted, adding that the color makes them easier to identify. “When I look in my drawer and pull out my bur blocks, I know right away which ones are DIAO.”

“With DIAO burs, the proof is in the pudding,” he added. “You don’t know what you could be missing out on unless you’re willing to be curious, so my call to colleagues is to be curious about DIAO burs and give them a try. They’re worth exploring—the few DIAO bur shapes I’ve used so far have shown a lot of promise, and I’m looking forward to seeing how other shapes and sizes in the product line perform, too.”
