Bone Substitutes that Simplify Regeneration
Geistlich Biomaterials offers a portfolio of regenerative materials designed to meet the needs of virtually any clinical scenario—from extraction socket management to peri-implantitis

Over the years, I’ve noticed that some manufacturers in the bone regenerative space tend to offer one-size-fits-all solutions. I have found this is not the case with Geistlich, as the manufacturer offers a user-friendly portfolio of regenerative materials that are geared toward specific situations I see in my practice, including:
- • Extraction Socket management
- • Minor bone augmentation
- • Major bone augmentation
- • Sinus floor elevation
- • Tissue regeneration
I have been using Geistlich Bio-Oss, a biocompatible porous bone mineral substitute, continuously for about 3 to 4 years and have been very satisfied with the results. In my opinion, it is a superior volume maintainer, which is especially important for large grafts. With other biomaterials, the site can become concave after healing due to material resorption. But with Geistlich Bio-Oss, it is still plump around the site.
Geistlich Bio-Oss is a xenograft (bovine bone) material that doesn’t turn over as fast as an allograft (human bone) material. It’s true that allograft materials exhibit quicker new bone formation, but I find that these materials can collapse down the road because they are resorbed so much more quickly. Xenograft material is slower to turnover, but the result is denser. It holds its body much better.
A Complete Regenerative Suite
For dentists new to implant dentistry and regeneration procedures, I recommend Geistlich Bio-Oss Collagen, which combines Geistlich Bio-Oss granules with 10% porcine collagen. The addition of 10% collagen to the xenograft material gives it a putty-like consistency that makes it very easy to handle and manipulate—just take the tooth out and pack it in. Of course, for more advanced cases, I usually mix my own material to fit the specific needs of the site. But for a novice user and during routine cases, Geistlich Bio-Oss Collagen offers treatment flexibility and ease of use while performing exceedingly well.
I also like Geistlich Bio-Gide Shape, which is a pre-cut resorbable collagen membrane designed for the treatment of non-intact extraction sockets. It yields slower absorption of moisture and lengthens the time available for exact positioning into the defect. You just tuck it into the socket and suture it closed. Finally, when I need fibrous materials for soft-tissue regeneration, Geistlich Fibro-Gide and Geistlich Mucograft fit in nicely. It’s a complete package.
Geistlich Biomaterials infuses consistency, predictability, and quality into its products, which is a huge benefit for me and my patients and translates to successful outcomes. They are a vertically integrated company that oversees all aspects of their products—from the cow their xenograft is harvested from to the final packaging prior to shipment. Their material comes from single-source manufacturing, which allows for consistent and reliable outcomes. Additionally, the products come in a variety of sizes, which allows me to select the particulate size most appropriate for each regeneration case.
