Primescan and DS Core open the door to better patient communication and treatment planning
It’s safe to say that Megan Weisenberger, DMD, is in the "prime" of her dental career. The Cincinnati native offers a wide range of comprehensive services in her family dental practice—including CEREC same-day crowns, SureSmile clear aligners, implants, and sleep appliances. But it wasn't always that way. “If you asked me 5 years ago, I would have told you I was never ever going to place implants,” said Dr. Weisenberger, who after purchasing her practice in 2017, soon invested in an intraoral scanner. “But the accuracy of Primescan has made treatment planning so predictable.”

“DS Core has allowed us to use our Primescan more efficiently because we don’t need to have the unit in front of us to pull up a scan,” said Dr. Weisenberger. “We scan all our new patients, and I typically use the scan to educate them before they go into hygiene. But if I’m using the Primescan for a crown in another room, I can’t get the unit back over to hygiene to do that.”
Luckily, DS Core creates a comprehensive patient media library that automatically integrates X-rays, scans, and images into a single location and is accessible across multiple devices. “My hygienist can open DS Core in her operatory and immediately see the CBCT and digital scans taken on the new patient,” Dr. Weisenberger added. “She can discuss points of crowding and why cleaning in those areas is a little more challenging, which may open the door to treatment with SureSmile aligners. It’s made accessibility so much easier.”
Collaboration Is Key
Sending 3D scans to specialists and patients through DS Core has been a breeze, virtually eliminating the need for third-party encryption email in Dr. Weisenberger's office. “It’s a really quick, efficient, and compliant communication method that saves my office time," she said.
Another time saver is treatment planning. “Being able to pull up CBCT scans, digital impressions, and photos on one screen allows me to see everything at once without flip-flopping between different views,” she continued. “It creates very streamlined treatment planning with the patient or a specialist. If you’re planning an implant, you can look at the bone as you’re looking at the 3D scan of the same area to make sure there’s not only enough room in the arch, but adequate bone for a successful procedure.”

Dr. Weisenberger admits that for those on the fence about digital dentistry, it can seem overwhelming when you look at the big picture. “But when you start to work with Primescan,” she said, “you realize it’s super intuitive and easy to use.
