NSK Electrics
When it comes to electric handpieces, DPS readers rely on NSK’s Ti-Max Z series, nano series, and NLZ micromotor to speed up procedures and decrease patient anxiety
Wow! I have a Tesla in my hand!” was Dr. Jeffrey Briney’s first thought after using NSK’s NLZ electric micromotor with the Ti-Max Z95L contra-angle. And when a doctor compares an electric handpiece system to a sleek, high-end car, you can be pretty certain it’s a powerful instrument. While NSK electric handpieces may not accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 2 seconds like a Tesla, DPS readers like Dr. Briney choose them as their go-to workhorses to speed up procedures and keep patients comfortable.
"The nano is very well balanced in my hand, which allows me to refine and polish my preparation with the most precision while preventing hand fatigue."

A Powerful Pair
Dr. Alan Howard said, “The combination of the NLZ micromotor with the Z95L handpiece is by far the best,” pointing out its quiet, smooth operation, small head, compact motor, and high torque. Dr. Stephen Gordon said he prepares teeth quickly and efficiently with the well-designed NLZ/Z95L duo, which “reduces appointment time, increases patient comfort and satisfaction, and has led to word-of-mouth referrals.” He said the system has worked consistently well for several years and has not needed any repairs.
Dr. Jayu Patel prefers the NSK brand because it offers many features that he could not find with other manufacturers. “The Ti-Max Z series handpieces are quiet and lightweight with a shorter head, small diameter, and a slimmer neck and body, which allows for greater visibility and access,” Dr. Patel noted, adding that he also appreciates the anti-heat system, especially when cutting zirconia crowns, and the LED light with adjustable intensity.
Small Yet Mighty
NSK introduced the Ti-Max nano series this year, a lightweight yet powerful workhorse with a design that NSK deems “smart miniaturization”— an accurate description if you ask Drs. Robin Henderson and Christina Do. “I have used nearly every electric handpiece out there, and I was excited to use a handpiece that is markedly shorter in length and has a much smaller and narrower head,” said Dr. Henderson. “It is very well balanced in my hand, which allows me to refine and polish my preparation with the most precision while preventing hand fatigue.” With the nano, Dr. Do pointed out that “patients don’t hear the high-pitched sound of the drill as much, so their anxiety has decreased.”
As a testament to the quality of NSK electrics, Dr. Henderson said she plans to replace all of her electric handpieces with the nano in the future, and Dr. Howard said, “I am replacing 2 of my motors with the NLZ and within a few years will equip all operatories with these.”
The Power of Integration
For endodontic procedures, Dr. Briney uses the NLZ E micromotor, which offers rotary and reciprocating functions and a maximum torque of 4.2 Ncm. The powerful NLZ E is at the heart of the new integrated NSK electric motor system from DCI Edge. The intuitive system incorporates the motor, handpiece, and other essential equipment into one unit that’s easily accessible to the clinician.
