Opalescence Boost: Whitening Success Story
The chemically activated material whitens teeth in about 1 hour
For some patients, exclusively esthetic treatment can seem like an indulgence. They’re not comfortable spending time or money on
something they don’t feel is necessary for their health. However, whitening can have a big impact on quality of life in a number of ways, not least of which is how you feel about yourself, which can translate into how you interact with others professionally and personally.
Sean Grady, DDS, who practices in Georgia, has a patient in her mid-forties who talked for years about having her teeth whitened, but had never taken that final step. He finally convinced her to whiten after telling her about Ultradent’s Opalescence Boost.

Turn Out the Light
Opalescence Boost’s 40% hydrogen peroxide gel is chemically activated so no light is required to whiten teeth in about an hour. “We get great results without the light,” said Dr. Grady. When a few patients asked him about the light, he tried it. “I found no difference whatsoever with the efficacy.”
In fact, Dr. Grady prefers not using the light. “It’s an extra step,” he explained. “And depending on the equipment, if the light is hand-held the process becomes monotonous.”
Instead, Dr. Grady uses Opalescence Boost’s double-syringe configuration to activate the 40% hydrogen peroxide formula immediately before application. The syringe, with its black mini-tip, ensures fresh gel every time and precise delivery.

Things When asked what he likes best about Opalescence Boost, he said, “Consistency, no light required, and the OpalDam.”
The whitening gel’s thick formulation prevents it from running, which is common with some other products. In addition, it contains potassium nitrate and fluoride and also has a high water content to reduce the dehydrating effect of tooth whitening and ensure patient comfort. The high water content also reduces shade relapse.
The OpalDam that comes with Opalescence Boost is a light-cured methacrylate-based resin barrier to protect soft tissue during whitening. Dr. Grady describes it as “better than most other similar materials.”

Remember that patient who decided to whiten after many years of consideration? “She thought the process would be uncomfortable, but she was surprised how easy the system is to use,” said Dr. Grady. “She asked about the ‘blue light,’ and I told her we use a modern material that’s developed not to require a UV light to activate it. She was impressed with that and impressed with the results.”
