PreXion 3D Excelsior
Advanced CBCT unit provides the imaging quality, speed, and precision needed for predictable one-stage implant procedures
Much of dental implants’ rapid rise in popularity is owed to advances in technology like CBCT, which affords clinicians high-quality 3D visualization vital to a variety of dental procedures—including implant placement. But, as Idaho-based practitioner Lon McRae, DMD, recalls, not all CBCT systems meet the mark.
“I bought my first CBCT 9 years ago, and it was the most expensive unit on the market,” he said. While the software was easy to use and the system had “all the bells and whistles” expected from top-of-the-line technology, there was one major problem: “On average, it took 11 minutes to get my images.”
“CBCT is the No. 1 selling tool I have. It brings immense value to the patient and the practice.”

Superior Imaging in Seconds
Seeking a better solution, Dr. McRae looked to PreXion, a longtime leader in medical and dental imaging. In researching the PreXion 3D Excelsior CBCT scanner, he was “blown away” by the quality of images it provided, and when he realized that he could purchase the machine for one-third of the price of his previous CBCT unit, the investment was a no-brainer.
“I was told it would be considerably faster than my other system,”
Dr. McRae shared, but he didn’t expect that the PreXion 3D Excelsior could reconstruct images in as little as 15 seconds— and he wasn’t the only one who noticed. “Initially, I didn't tell my lab that I had switched machines, but they called me saying, ‘I don't know what you did, but the images are so much better.’” Dr. McRae’s patients took note, too, as the detailed scan slices and 3D rendering produced by the PreXion 3D Excelsior offer compelling tools that aid in patient education and case acceptance. “CBCT is the No. 1 selling tool I have,” he disclosed. “Once patients see what will happen if we remove the tooth and place an implant, I’ve had a 95% success rate in getting them to accept treatment. It brings immense value to the patient and the practice.”
The Accuracy You Need
Though Dr. McRae has performed thousands of freehand implant placements, he prefers using surgical guides for onestage procedures, which allows patients to leave his office with a restored tooth that same day. In his experience, the only way to attain the pinpoint accuracy needed for these procedures is with a solid CBCT image.
“The scanner has to be right on the button,” he said. With the PreXion 3D Excelsior, Dr. McRae reports that his implant workflow is virtually seamless. “Today, patients want their treatment to be faster and more predictable,” he said. “Nobody wants to walk out of your offi ce without a smile, but in order to give them that smile, you need accuracy. The PreXion 3D Excelsior delivers that—and then some.”
