Product Spotlight: SafeGauze HemoStat

It’s not always easy to stop patients from bleeding post-extraction. Ordinary gauze performs like a scab to prevent bleeding, but stopping the persistent oozing can be a drawn-out process that requires direct pressure, gauze saturation, and drying. All the while, the patient is uncomfortable.

Medicom’s SafeGauze HemoStat absorbable hemostatic dressing represents a faster, easier way to control bleeding after extractions, periodontal surgery, and other procedures by creating a plug that adheres to the wound and closes off blood cells. When it comes in contact with blood or fluids, the sponge expands and transforms into a clear, viscous gel that fills and adheres to the extraction socket.

“SafeGauze is made of a material that is easier to place and stays put better than [other surgical sponges],” said Thomas Gilbert, DDS, a DPS evaluator and general practitioner in Fort Wayne, IN.

The gel consistency of SafeGauze HemoStat allows it to fill wound voids, seal capillary ends, activate the clotting system, and rapidly help to stop bleeding.

“After extraction or any other surgery, SafeGauze HemoStat helps to establish the clot quicker, especially on patients with thinner blood or excessive bleeders due to blood thinning medication,” said Dr. Gilbert. “My assistant is really impressed with how quickly it establishes a clot on these patients so she can release the patient to be on their way.”

The sterile fabric is prepared by the chemical treatment of regenerated cellulose. After its conversion to a gelatinous mass plugs the wound void and controls bleeding, the material eventually dissolves to saline and glucose. The material continues to promote wound healing thanks to natural antibacterial properties.

“SafeGauze HemoStat helps the clotting process to expedite healing, and it just seems to do a better job [compared to other hemostats] as it forms to the wound or post-extraction socket,” said Dr. Gilbert.

There is no need to suture over the dressing because it stays securely in place, which saves time by lessening postoperative issues like delayed bleeding.

“If we can do something that doesn’t really add any extra time to the appointment but can limit the postoperative issues like prolonged bleeding or dry sockets,” Dr. Gilbert said, “then why wouldn’t you use it?”
