Soft-Tissue Isolation and Protection
Intraoral isolation provided by the innovative MavGuard ensures that soft tissues are protected throughout the whitening treatment. MavGuard offers first-of-its-kind gingival protection with its flexible silicone material. MavGuard simplifies the process of isolating soft tissue with its precut holes for teeth. Bridges between the holes floss between teeth until the guards are fully seated onto each arch. ArmorLC light-cure resin is then applied along gingival margins to complete the isolation process.
How ioWave Technology Works
The proprietary TheraSmile Whitening mouthpiece fits over the MavGuards and forms a vacuum seal around the treatment area to deliver targeted whitening. Heat from the Heat Management Unit initiates thermochemical reactivity within the gel to enhance enamel penetration and accelerate whitening.
“It’s the only system that’s able to isolate the teeth and gum tissue from the rest of the oral cavity,” explained Dr. Pierce, who has used the system himself. “It forms that vacuum seal around the teeth and then injects peroxide gel that contacts only the teeth and stays only on the teeth. The heating element is integrated inside the mouthpiece so it can heat up and activate the gel just before it contacts the teeth.”

Dynamic Fluid Supply
TheraSmile allows teeth to be fully immersed in a dynamic solution, which means there is a constant supply of fluid on the teeth throughout the entire treatment. These refreshed fluids are continuously circulated over the treatment area to increase contact time with activated fluids, intensifying whitening and preventing desiccation. Dr. Pierce believes his patients are more comfortable during and after the whitening treatment because their teeth are immersed in hydration, and they can keep their mouths closed during the entire treatment. In addition, TheraSmile features a continuous circulation of fluid. These factors prevent dehydration of the teeth, which is what can cause sensitivity with other systems.
