Ushering in the world’s first dual-wavelength soft-tissue diode laser, the 2015 introduction of Ultradent’s Gemini 810 + 980 marked a significant step forward in dentistry. The Gemini was, and is, a remarkable tool, one that brings greater utility and efficiency to clinical workflows—all while promoting increased patient comfort and satisfaction. Now, with the Gemini EVO, Ultradent builds upon the successes of the original Gemini laser to offer practitioners even more power, versatility, and user-friendly features.

And thanks to Ultradent’s recent acquisition of Ease-In-Shields laser filter inserts, taking the next evolutionary step in laser dentistry has never been safer or easier.

Super-Pulsed Power & Precision

With 100 watts of peak super-pulsed power, the Gemini EVO delivers 5x the power of the original Gemini laser. The result? Faster, smoother cutting of soft tissues with ultra-clean incisions and less heat  generation. Super-pulsed power also improves cutting speed and precision while affording a longer thermal relaxation period that mitigates unwanted tissue damage.

Ed Kusek, DDS, an Ultradent clinical instructor with over 20 years of practical dental laser experience, pointed out an important distinction. While all diode lasers increase healing and reduce patient discomfort, he said, “Super-pulsed lasers like Gemini EVO allow the target tissue time to rest, decreasing incidence of edema and necroses.”

With a total of 3 wavelength options, the Gemini EVO allows Dr. Kusek to choose between using the 810 nm or 980 nm wavelengths individually to optimize coagulation or ablation, or use them together for a combined effect.

Pain-Free Procedures

Dentists can use the Gemini EVO to laser to perform a variety of procedures—from virtually pain-free periodontal therapy, bacterial reduction, and troughing for crown and bridge preparations to biopsies, frenectomies, and more.

Dr. Kusek shared that the Gemini EVO especially excels when used for photobiomodulation (PBM), explaining, “We all want to avoid giving our patients narcotics for pain relief, and with PBM, you can curtail the amount of postop pain your patients will encounter.”

The Gemini EVO laser includes 3 PBM adapters—3 mm, 7 mm, and 25 mm—which allow clinicians to provide efficient pain management for indications that range from small areas around the lips to localized ulcers and large spots surrounding the TMJ. Given these benefits, and coupled with the laser’s sleek, visibly high-tech design, it’s no surprise that the Gemini EVO has received a “very positive” reception from Dr. Kusek’s patients. “They can see that I’ve invested in their comfort and healing,” he shared.

User-Friendly Features

In addition to a portable, ergonomic design that elevates clinical convenience and operator comfort, the Gemini EVO is packed with a wealth of user-friendly features. Haptic technology in the foot pedal and handpiece delivers tactile indicators that the laser is firing, while an adjustable illuminated tip enhances treatment site visibility.

The Gemini EVO also includes built-in WiFi connectivity, a dashboard that tracks ROI, usage statistics, procedure reports, and other valuable data points, plus a guided touchscreen interface with 16 pre-programmed procedure settings. “The entire system is designed for quick and easy use—you and your staff can set up and begin utilizing the laser right away,” said Dr. Kusek.

For practitioners who are new to laser dentistry, Ultradent additionally offers free training with every Gemini EVO purchase. “Ultradent’s educational resources are second to none,” Dr. Kusek affirmed. “They provide online instruction that takes you through numerous treatments step by step, as well as in person courses that will increase your knowledge and confidence while using the laser.”

Easing Into Laser Safety

To help clinicians maximize safety while using the Gemini EVO, Ultradent recently acquired Ease-In-Shields from ViewMax Solutions, LLC. A unique family of protective loupe inserts for laser and curing light users, Ease-In-Shields feature a double-patented shape that fits into most loupe and eyewear designs.

One of the main issues I encountered with laser filter inserts from other companies was fogging of the loupes,” Dr. Kusek shared. “With Ease-In-Shields, you can use your laser without having to continually stop and read just the inserts—just slide the min and off you go.”

Developed by dentists to provide comfortable, hands-free laser eye protection—and eliminate the need to hold protective glasses in front of your loupes—Ease-In-Shields ensure total protective coverage as certified by Laservision USA’s Safety Laboratories. Various options are available to meet the filtration demands of different laser wavelengths and curing lights. With a polycarbonate construction that makes them light, strong, and fog-resistant, Ease-In-Shields come with an optional head strap that allows them to be worn without loupes when needed

Ultimately, Dr. Kusek recommends Ease-In-Shields to any Gemini EVO user. “If you own a laser and use loupes, this product is a must,” he said. “It’s affordable, saves time, and creates less stress in every procedure.”
