TheraCal PT

Available in a dual-syringe delivery system, this biocompatible, dual-cured, resin-modified calcium silicate is specifically designed for pulpotomy treatment

Having spent decades in private practice, Dr. David Martin believes there are simply no other products available on the market today that are as effective as TheraCal PT for restorative work. Here, he discusses a recent case in which using TheraCal PT allowed a timely and effective outcome for a pediatric patient

theracal pt recommended product.

I am frequently asked by my peers why I use a particular product. The simple answer, when discussing TheraCal PT, is that I have found no other restorative product that performs as well.

Not too long ago, I had a 6-year old patient who presented with a toothache on tooth K. We took an x-ray, which revealed decay that extended to the pulp. The patient was extremely apprehensive, very young, and this was his first visit to the dentist. We were able to get the tooth anesthetized and quickly had a larger exposure. I knew I had minimal time to work because my very young patient was moving quite a lot.

Cured in Seconds

Upon examination, I found that a pulpotomy was required. Prior to using TheraCal PT, my experience has been that a good amount of time is necessary in order to achieve hemostasis. Plus the filling materials always need time to set. But TheraCal PT was placed and cured in seconds. With this presentation, I was able to place the final restoration quickly and achieve a positive experience for the patient.

“It really is my liner of choice for deep restorations.”

- David Martin, DDS

In reviewing this case, I believe TheraCal PT allowed me to treat quickly, resulting in less chairtime for my patient, and a good experience for him. Likely owing to that favorable experience, the patient returned, without incident, so that I could restore the remaining decayed teeth. I was able to develop a nice rapport with him and I believe it’s largely due to TheraCal PT’s ability to perform quickly, allowing procedures like this to take less time.

Quick, Stable Restoration

In addition to its quick action, TheraCal PT provides calcium release and serves as a stable base that does not affect the pulpal tissue. This allows for a quick, stable restoration that is kind to the surrounding tissue. In addition to the material's chemistry, the dual cure and the ability to complete the restoration in a timely fashion are the two biggest benefits I've experienced when using TheraCal PT.

The negative aspects of other pulpotomy materials concern me, especially their cytotoxic effect and the fact that they are difficult to handle. TheraCal PT handles nicely and is quite versatile to use as a liner or base on deep restorations. The chemistry will work on any deep restoration, even pulp capping. It really is my liner of choice for deep restorations.
