ZirClean and Z-Prime Plus create a winning combo that offers strength, versatility, and simplicity during zirconia restorations
Dr. Donald Jetter likes zirconia. “We place about 5 zirconia restorations per week,” he said. “It offers strength…and the cost is much lower compared to using any noble metals.” He uses full zirconia for posterior restorations and fixed bridges, and esthetic zirconia in the anterior. “Esthetic zirconia, which has less strength than full zirconia, still offers a lot of strength and works well for anterior teeth,” Dr. Jetter added.
Any dentist who finds zirconia the answer to several restorative applications—as Dr. Jetter does—wants to ensure the material offers long-lasting results. For Dr. Jetter, those results are supported by 2 products that work in tandem: BISCO’s ZirClean nonabrasive cleaning agent and Z-Prime Plus priming agent.
ZirClean: Contamination Elimination
With the goal of achieving reliable cementation after trying-in a zirconia restoration and before final placement, the tooth and bonding surface of the material must be cleaned of all contamination—including from saliva and the phosphate associated with zirconia. ZirClean’s delivery system makes this step simple.
“ZirClean is very easy to dispense directly into the restoration with a bent needle tip,” said Dr. Jetter. He compared this to the previous cleaning agent he used, which he said required “dispensing a drop and then rubbing it into the restoration with an applicator.”
Dr. Jetter also noted the color of ZirClean. “Due to its dark blue color, it’s easier to visualize that it’s completely rinsed off.” Again, he compared this aspect to his previous cleaning agent, which he described as “faint pink” and difficult to see.
Z-Prime Plus: Adhesion Preparation
Designed to enhance the bond strength of zirconia, alumina, and metal substrates, Z-Prime Plus contains 2 active monomers—MDP (a phosphate monomer) and BPDM (a carboxylate monomer). When combined, they create a synergistic effect that increases bond strength.
This single-component priming agent simplifies the application process. “Z-Prime Plus is easy to dispense directly into the restoration from the plastic squeeze bottle as opposed to the glass bottle of [my previous priming agent], which had a more technique-sensitive dispenser.”
Other convenience-enhancing features include a homogenous solution—which eliminates the need to shake the bottle before application—compatibility with light and dual-cure resin luting cements, and room-temperature storage.
Winning Combo
Dental Product Shopper evaluators have given high marks to both ZirClean and Z-Prime Plus. Of ZirClean, Dr. John Leitner said that the product gave him peace of mind, “knowing I am doing all I can to ensure a strong bond.” Dr. Kapish Goyal described it as a “new gold standard. Its unique chemistry sets it apart so it can be used for a variety of crowns.”
Dr. Paul Olenyn praised the versatility of Z-Prime Plus. “I like that I could use it for so many different procedures [and with] so many materials,” he said.
BISCO has brought together 2 products that perform well individually. When used together, they take zirconia restorations to the next level. Dr. Steven Edelson, another clinician who’s used both products, finds the experience “straightforward and predictable.” Dr. Jetter, who’s only recently introduced ZirClean and Z-Prime Plus into his practice, hasn’t experienced any failures and expects “comparable results to other products” with the added benefit of a streamlined workflow.
