Dr. Arthur Volker first saw the Zyris Isolite isolation system at a dental conference about 20 years ago, and he was immediately intrigued—so intrigued, in fact, that he purchased the system and has been using it ever since, upgrading the device whenever new models were introduced. Here, he shares how the latest generation Isolite Pro has increased his workflow efficiency, offered him superior isolation, visibility, and access, and ensured a more comfortable and safer experience for his patients.

I've been practicing for about 2 decades, so I remember the days of using only cotton rolls for isolation. The main problem with that technique was how often we'd need to change out the cotton—there’d be soggy cotton rolls, constant interruptions midtreatment, and a very uncomfortable experience for the patient.

The Isolite Pro is so much more efficient. It keeps the area dry first and foremost, while also retracting the tongue and cheek for better access. The integrated light is perfect because now I can see better in addition to having a retracted field. It includes 3 levels of LED illumination with both a white light and true amber cure-safe mode for shadowless illumination and maximum visibility when placing light-sensitive materials.

Blending Efficiency and Comfort

Before using Isolite, I would be retracting the cheek, and my assistant would be retracting the patient’s tongue and also taking care of the suction. But when it was time to change the cotton, we’d lose the suction, which created a very uncomfortable dance for everyone.

Using the Isolite Pro means I no longer run the risk of pushing too hard on the patient's tongue or potentially causing some type of laceration to the floor of the mouth or the cheek. I’m also not worried about a piece of restoration breaking off the tooth and accidentally going down the patient’s airway. It’s easy to use a digital scanner for impressions because the cheek and tongue are already retracted. It's a fantastic method to capture margins.

I use the Isolite Pro on individuals of all ages. Patients get tired of keeping their jaw open, and the bite block on the Isolite Pro allows them to relax during the procedure. I've even had patients fall asleep with the device in place. Using the Isolite Pro has become a routine part of my treatments. I don’t think I could practice dentistry without it!

I also use the HOOPLA Retractor by Zyris for upper and lower anterior access, along with the Zyris Isolite Posterior Mouthpiece. After using several brands of mouthpieces, I’ve found that the single-use Zyris products are by far the most comfortable for patients, and also the most versatile. Similar autoclavable devices tend to be too stiff and prone to clouding after sterilization, and those without a light don’t provide the same level of sturdiness or functionality.
