Joy Void-Holmes is a dental hygienist with over 25 years of clinical experience. She is also the founder of Dr. Joy, RDH; the creator of the Dental Hygiene Student Planner; and the cofounder of JELL-ED, an educational consultancy designed to bridge the gap between education and the educator. Void-Holmes is a published author and professional speaker, presenting a variety of continuing education courses nationally and internationally about instrumentation, ultrasonics, infection control, nutrition and biochemistry, and dentinal hypersensitivity, along with her signature keynotes, Confidence and Courage and Diversity of Culture, Diversity of Thought, and Diversity of Action.

Looking back on her experience with Kettenbach’s Profisil Fluoride Varnish, Joy Void-Holmes admits that she began using the gel with a healthy dose of skepticism, particularly regarding its consistency and ability to uniformly coat the teeth. But to her surprise, the varnish applied smoothly with excellent migratory properties and without clumping—even in hard-to-reach areas of the mouth. This is just one of its standout features. Here, Void-Holmes shares other perks that make Profisil her go-to fluoride varnish.

While all fluoride varnishes are designed to occlude dentinal tubules and release fluoride, there are many other factors that contribute to a product's effectiveness—among them migration, delivery system, discoloration, and flavor. I've recently discovered that Profisil has many wonderful features that impact its overall effectiveness, and I'm happy to say that many others in the dental community wholeheartedly agree.

Smart Formulation, Easy Application

A number of these standout features stem from Profisil’s tissue-friendly formulation. By eliminating ethyl alcohol, which can induce a burning sensation that deters patients from future fluoride varnish treatment, Profisil improves patient comfort and promotes a positive experience.

Additionally, Profsil is allergy-friendly and free of ingredients such as gluten, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, sesame, corn, shellfish, egg, or dairy. It also does not contain colophony, otherwise known as rosin. Used as a film-forming agent, rosin can promote strong adhesion; however, some individuals may exhibit sensitivity to it, leading to potential allergic reactions.

Another unexpected benefit is Profisil’s unique texture and viscosity, allowing for application in any direction on both wet and dry surfaces. There are no concerns over fluoride toxicity, as single-dose blister packs guarantee patients receive the exact amount of fluoride varnish required for treatment. This pro-motes uniform application and prevents any excess or waste. The brush applicator makes it simple to apply, which increases treatment efficiency, and prior biofilm removal is not required.

Esthetic, Patient-Pleasing Results

For me, the biggest benefit to Profisil is that within moments after application, patients can't even tell there is varnish on their teeth. It is colorless and brushes on transparent, which is great for adults who are concerned about esthetics post-treatment. As for hypersensitivity relief, I can only share my personal experience—that is, I have observed a significant reduction in sensitivity after applying Profisil to my own sensitive areas.

When I talk to patients, they appreciate the same qualities about Profisil as I do. They love that it does not adhere to their soft tissues; they do not feel it on their teeth; and there is no unpleasant, lingering taste—especially when they choose the unflavored version. That’s a huge plus!
