Your Patients Deserve a Healthy, Protected Pulp

A biocompatible, dual-cured, resin-modified calcium silicate material, TheraCal PT maintains tooth vitality by performing as a barrier that protects the dental pulpal complex

Just like a castle is surrounded by a moat to safeguard it from unwelcomed intruders, the dental pulpal complex relies on a tooth’s enamel and dentin to protect it from harmful bacteria and decay. However, once the barrier to entry has been compromised, the priority in both cases is the same: repair the damage and retain the integrity of the core structure that remains.

In the case of dental pulp exposed by trauma or decay, BISCO’s TheraCal PT acts as a barrier and support system for the pulp, which can help prevent more invasive treatment down the road. That is why Todd Sarubin, DDS, has used TheraCal PT nearly every day for the past two years in his Pikesville, MD, practice.

“Since I started including TheraCal PT in my treatment regimen, I have witnessed a root canal prevention success rate of over 90% among my patients,” he said.

Features and Indications

TheraCal PT is a dual-cured, resin-modified calcium silicate material with a unique hydrophilic matrix and alkaline pH that promote pulp vitality.¹ Dr. Sarubin said that unlike other calcium hydroxide products he has used, TheraCal PT is moisture tolerant and will not wash out when rinsing off etchant. It is also biocompatible and requires no mixing.

Primarily indicated for pulpotomies, TheraCal PT serves as a barrier and protectant of the dental pulpal complex and can be used as a liner or base in both direct and indirect restorations.

Dr. Sarubin said he has seen the best results using this material for direct pulp capping but has used it for indirect pulp capping, too, as well as when restoring deep preparations with darkly stained dentin, and treating small amounts of leftover
decay that are too close to the pulp.

“When applying TheraCal PT, always make sure the tooth prep is clean and free of debris,” Dr. Sarubin said. “I use a desensitizer to clean all surfaces, and then place TheraCal PT very carefully in the prep. I like letting it self cure because it helps prevent shrinkage and ensures the material won’t pull away from the pulpal floor.”

Simple Delivery, Satisfying Results

Additionally, TheraCal PT’s syringe delivery with an automix tip make it easy to place it across indications. The material has a working time of 45 seconds, a setting time of 5 minutes, and a light-cure time of just 10 seconds, effectively speeding up procedures. When it comes to follow-up appointments, TheraCal PT’s radiopacity comes in handy for Dr. Sarubin by ensuring easy identification and differentiation from recurrent decay and other restorative materials.
