Foil Design & Holder
Designed with a 12- thickness, Arti-Fol is a “convenient way to mark occlusion without the need for a separate instrument to hold the marking medium,” said Dr. Debra Haselton, who liked the shape and size of the handle. “I like that it comes in a red/black combination and has the built-in cardboard handle, which greatly facilitates the foil’s placement, covering the entire quadrant,” shared Dr. Donald Jetter. Appreciating the foil being “all in one piece with no holder required,” Dr. Krista Kappus found it “easy to pull out of the drawer and quickly check the bite.” Dr. Manny Chopra said he would prefer if the cardboard holder was straight, without curves, and another dentist felt the foil was too thin.
A few of the evaluators tried Bausch’s Arti-Fol Forceps, which “allow me to secure the crown and mark the contacts without the risk of dropping the crown down the patient’s throat,” explained Dr. Brandon Stapleton. Dr. Haselton said the forceps “came in handy and worked well,” especially after her assistant got used to positioning them.
Distinctive Markings
The unique combination of a high-tech metal foil (Shimstock foil 12 ) and a 2-sided color coating with microfine ground color pigments enables clear visible marking of all occlusal contact points. Arti-Fol provided “much better markings in a wet environment,” shared Dr. Denise Habjan, and Dr. Steven Spitz added, “It marked well, and I loved the convenience of the individual pieces.” After
Using Arti-Fol for crowns and bridges, implant-supported crowns, dentures, and fillings, Dr. Chopra decided, “It works well and was a great material to use.” Also describing the film as “great” when the bite is close, Dr. Peter Dantini suggested that the markings “may not show well when the bite is significantly off.”
“I had previously used only blue articulating paper, but found the red/black combination to be very easy to use on both teeth and restoration surfaces,” shared Dr. Jetter, who called Arti-Fol “a very effective and easy-to-use product.” He added, “The foil contact checker and the metal holder were instrumental when seating a bridge where the contact was overbuilt by the lab.”
Accurate Readings
“I was able to get more accurate occlusal markings, which was especially helpful in delivering implant-supported restorations,” reported Dr. Joseph Hwang. “Good distinct markings, even with highly polished surfaces, made for easy adjustments.” Dr. Anderson called the single-sided colored strip “super helpful for multiunit cases, saving both time and materials while simultaneously confirming even contacts and very slight restorative interferences.” Dr. Chopra described the foil as “accurate and repeatable in contact registration,” while Dr. Haselton felt it “sometimes didn’t seem to mark.”
Arti-Fol “found slight high spots on a full-arch implant case that weren’t seen with other articulating paper,” reported Dr. Spitz. “Arti-Fol indicates tooth points during occlusion with minimal interference,” said Dr. Dantini, who called it “a great product when you need fine detail or when you have a monster bite that destroys paper in one go.” Noting that “the clear and accurate markings help to save chair time,” Dr. Jetter shared, “I had never used a foil product and was very impressed with the ease of use, durability, and accuracy of Arti-Fol metallic.”

Overall Satisfaction
Arti-Fol is “an easy transition from what we currently use,” said Dr. Stapleton, who loved the product and said his assistants enjoyed it as well. Dr. Hwang noted, “The quality of the film was very good and held up well to multiple markings.” Calling Arti-Fol “so unique that I can’t think of any way in which it could be improved,” Dr. Jetter concluded, “The quality and application of this product are excellent.”
