John Jackfert, DDS, explains why Henry Schein's Maxima Advanced High-Speed Air Handpiece and its Active-Stop Technology earned its place in his pediatric dentistry practice

Every day at Just for Kids Dentistry in St. Albans, WV, Dr. John Jackfert sees wiggly patients with small mouths who struggle to keep their tongues out of the way when he is working on them. This makes it imperative for him to have control over the handpiece he uses for restorative dentistry.

However, his experience with handpieces was that they would keep rotating even after taking your foot off the pedal. That's why Dr. Jackfert's favorite feature of Henry Schein's Maxima Advanced High-Speed Air Handpiece is the Active-Stop Technology. For example, a patient surprised Dr. Jackfert by jumping in the chair while he was using the handpiece. Dr. Jackfert lifted his foot off the pedal, concerned about cutting the patient's cheek. However, the responsive Active-Stop Technology prevented any damage.

"You want something that's going to stop when you let your foot off the pedal," Dr. Jackfert said. "You don't want to cut through the floor of anybody's mouth or cheek. You need a handpiece that will do what you want when you want it to do it."

Ergonomics and Comfort for All-Day Use

Because clinicians use handpieces all day, they should feel comfortable in the hand, run smoothly, and provide reliable results. As Dr. Jackfert described it, a handpiece is an extension of the clinician's hand, just as a baseball glove is to a baseball player. However, many handpieces feel heavy, or the turbines fail quickly. The Maxima Advanced handpiece is different, he said. It feels light in his hands.

"It's very ergonomic for dentists, and it feels like it's made with quality [materials]," Dr. Jackfert said. "It's also affordable, so you can probably even buy multiple handpieces and not break the bank."

Plus, the 2-year warranty delivers even more peace of mind for clinicians when buying a handpiece they will use throughout the day. "We're going as hard as we can with them multiple times a day, and things can happen," Dr. Jackfert said. "If something does happen, you've got a 2-year warranty that they'll fix or replace it for free."

Dr. Jackfert also appreciates the 97 degrees of angulation on the head of the Maxima Advanced, making it easier to get into hard-to-access areas. Additionally, he enjoys the aerosol reduction the handpiece provides, he said, noting that it reduces the dust and aromas associated with restorative dentistry. This feature also means he can see better than usual.

The ability to control the water spray is another feature clinicians appreciate. Sometimes handpieces are hard to adjust, either cutting off the water entirely or gushing out at the slightest turn, Dr. Jackfert explained. With the Maxima Advanced, he can control the spray where it isn't too little or too much.

The handpiece’s anti-slip grip is different from others that often have a smooth, metal feel. Dr. Jackfert appreciated the grip and said there is no worry about it slipping or turning the wrong way when working on a patient at a challenging angle.

"That's huge when you're working with gloves, spit, water, and everything else," Dr. Jackfert said.

A Reliable and Affordable Choice

The Maxima Advanced provides numerous benefits, including robust cutting power, quiet performance, reduced aerosol production, an anti-slip grip, Active-Stop Technology, and a flexible RPM range. Dr. Jackfert thinks all these features help overcome many of the challenges clinicians face in their operatories.

"It's an affordable handpiece, but it's also a reliable handpiece," Dr. Jackfert said. "If you're looking for that type of handpiece, this one checks those boxes."
