Beneath the Surface—Killing Pathogens in Your Practice
Formulated with Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide technology, Oxivir 1 is chosen for its speed, efficacy, and safety
As a dental professional, you know better than anyone how many harmful germs and bacteria you and your patients can come into contact with if your operatory isn’t cleaned and disinfected properly. So why would you leave such an important task to just any disinfecting wipe?
India Chance, RDH, has 26 years of experience and takes infection control seriously. In 2017, Chance started her own compliance company, Learn2Prevent, where she trains dental practices and teams in the United States and other countries to perform proper infection control.
In training and in practice, Chance uses Dentsply Sirona’s Oxivir 1 disinfecting wipes because she knows that they will keep her environment clean and her and her patients safe. “I want to make sure the operatory is not only a safe environment for each patient to be received, but also an environment I feel safe working in,” she shared.
Superior Kill Time
It takes only 1 minute for Oxivir 1 to kill pathogens and bioburdens, which makes these wipes the ideal choice for any practice. As a certified OSHA trainer and infection control educator, as well as a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state board inspector for Maryland, Chance has used a variety of disinfectants and chooses to stick with Oxivir 1.
“I train teams using the Oxivir 1 wipes because they have a 1-minute kill time and tuberculocidal claims,” explained Chance. “That’s very important to me. Tuberculosis is pretty much the strongest pathogen present in a nonhospital–based dental setting, so a disinfectant that will kill tuberculosis is most likely going to kill weaker diseases like HIV, coronavirus, and hepatitis B.”
The short, 1-minute kill time is important to Chance because if she is turning over the room for the next patient, she does not have a lot of time to clean and disinfect. “We see a lot of patients, so time is a hot commodity in a dental office,” explained Chance. “To be able to use a disinfectant quickly before I see my next patient is very important, but I also want to make sure that I am killing all the pathogens that have come into my operatory. Oxivir 1 is very effective.”
Consistent and Persistent Contact
Chance also appreciated that the Oxivir 1 wipe is wet enough to make sure surfaces stay saturated for an entire minute. With some other brands, the wipes are wet when you first pull them out, but their drying time is much quicker than what they claim, which means that the surface is not wet for long enough to break the chain of infection.
In fact, many practices are making this mistake without even realizing it. According to Chance, Oxivir 1 wipes are the best for practices because they will help any team work more efficiently and stay compliant, breaking the chain of infection and allowing for a safer working environment.
“Our whole goal with infection prevention is to break the chain of infection,” explained Chance. “Often, we put all the burden on personal protective equipment (PPE), when it’s the disinfection step that’s more effective. These measures should work together to keep the staff and patients safe.”
