For many years, Dr. Rolando Nuñez has combined his passions for adhesive dentistry and craft beer into an engaging social media presence with a loyal following. But in 2019, when he was invited to present at an event held by the Dental Influencers Alliance, Dr. Nuñez found a unique opportunity to bring his online presence to life through a live presentation, which he aptly named Bonding and Beer.

“I’ve been lecturing and attending dental trade shows for a long time. Even though a topic might seem interesting and the speaker is extremely knowledgeable, the lecture can still be boring at times,” Dr. Nuñez said.

“I’ve put a lot of effort into developing lectures that deliver their intended messages in an entertaining way.”

With that, Bonding and Beer became an instant success, leaving attendees eager for more and repeatedly asking, “When are you doing Bonding and Beer again?”

Fast forward to today, Dr. Nuñez brings 25 years of dental practice experience and over a decade as BISCO’s Manager of Clinical Marketing to the newly launched Bonding and Beer podcast, which aims to provide valuable clinical insights alongside captivating craft beer reviews.

Education Meets Entertainment

“When the team at BISCO asked me if I would host a podcast talking about restorative dentistry, which is basically what I’d already been doing on my own social media outlets, I asked them, ‘Can I drink beer while I do it?’” Dr. Nuñez said. “After getting approval for that, the idea for the podcast just took off from there.”

Bonding and Beer episodes are released biweekly, covering topics such as how to avoid postop sensitivity, the best indications for different bonding techniques, what makes a material bioactive, and much more. Dr. Nuñez also teased that future episodes will focus on silane applications, the proper use of fiber posts, as well as a pair of episodes solely dedicated to zirconia bonding.

“Having this type of content being created at BISCO for members of the dental community further supports one of the key elements of our company’s mission, and that’s education,” Dr. Nuñez said. As an industry leader dedicated to understanding and improving adhesive dentistry, BISCO places tremendous value not only on manufacturing innovative, reliable, and award-winning restorative products, but also sharing its research and knowledge to benefit clinicians and their practices worldwide.

“Bonding and Beer feels a lot like other podcasts that are put together by regular people, providing this sense of relatability between the host and the audience,” Dr. Nuñez explained. “I just sit down at the mic with my beer and share the information I know and the life experiences I’ve had. This approach makes what I'm sharing easy to digest, while being both informative and entertaining.”

Don’t Forget Your Beer!

“We open each episode by welcoming the audience, and for certain topics, we will also have guests. Then, we introduce the topic for the day, followed by the beer we will be drinking for the duration of the episode,” Dr. Nuñez said. “We talk about the brewery where the beer is made, what type of beer it is, what the beer is supposed to taste like…and after offering our pearls of wisdom about dental bonding, which listeners can apply in their offices, we review the beer and give it a score between 1 and 5.”

In episode 1, Dr. Nuñez reviewed his “go-to" beer, Anti-Hero IPA, which is brewed locally at Revolution Brewing in Chicago. “This is extremely hoppy and bitter, and it has a great aftertaste,” he shared, generously rating it with a score of 5.5 out of 5. “It matches the brewery description pretty much to the tee. It has this bright, crisp finish.”

Listeners are encouraged to submit questions to Dr. Nuñez for a Q&A segment that wraps up each Bonding and Beer episode via email at bondingandbeer@gmail.com or through the podcast’s Instagram profile, @bondingandbeer.
