Henry Schein: A Heritage of Growth
Henry Schein is dedicated to making a positive impact on the world by aligning its business strengths with the needs of society
The story of Henry Schein, the world’s largest provider of healthcare solutions, begins in 1932. After graduating from Columbia University’s College of Pharmacy in New York City, the company’s namesake, Henry Schein, borrowed $500 to open his own pharmacy in Queens.
As the industry evolved, Schein eventually expanded into dental supplies, a market that was growing quickly as new technology offered better, smarter, and ultimately more effective solutions to meet the challenges of the most common oral health problems. By the time Schein represented almost 10 percent of the dental supply market, the torch would be passed to Henry’s son, Marvin, and later his brother, Jay.
With the company’s major focus now on dentistry, the family-owned and -operated distributor added many new products to its growing catalog, all of which coincide with either important advances in dental health or the evolving needs of the practices themselves.
Henry Schein’s path would take a particularly influential turn after Stanley M. Bergman took over as CEO in 1989. He would eventually lead the company into the 21st century by going public and acquiring smaller companies that would make the catalog of products and solutions even more competitive.
A native of South Africa, Bergman had experience in finance that provided a key foundation to ultimately help grow the company well into the 21st century.
One of the biggest changes came in 1995, which is when Henry Schein began trading publicly. The initial public offering raised more than $74 million. Just one year later, Henry Schein was up to $1.4 billion in sales with $29 million in profit. The company also made 14 separate acquisitions in 1995, cementing its reputation as the major dental product supplier in the United States.
Now in its 90th year, Henry Schein has become both a solutions and product supplier powered by a robust technology and service network. With more than 22,000 employees globally, the company serves an estimated 1 million customers around the world with 300 different solutions designed to improve operational success and overall clinical outcomes in dentistry and medicine.
Many of these solutions support dental labs, government, and institutional healthcare clinics and alternative care sites worldwide.
Henry Schein’s product catalog also has expanded since its early days, accounting for more than 120,000 branded products, as well as private label supplies, in addition to more than 180,000 special-order items.
Based in Melville, NY, not far from where Henry Schein opened his first pharmacy 90 years ago, the Fortune 500 company now operates in 32 countries and territories. The company’s sales reached $12.4 billion in 2021 and have grown at a compound annual rate of approximately 12.5 percent since Henry Schein became a public company.
Among the many solutions and services offered by Henry Schein, the Henry Schein Brand catalog represents a comprehensive resource of products designed to meet dental practice needs with an emphasis on quality and value. Following is a list of several excellent Henry Schein Brand products to consider adding to your armamentarium.

ACCLEAN Professional Whitening Strips
These strips are professional strength with specially formulated 10% hydrogen peroxide. Because these strips are dissolvable, they make for quick treatments, which is ideal for whitening on the go. The strips also leave no messy residue behind on patients’ teeth and have a fresh mint flavor, which leaves patients’ mouths feeling refreshed. These simple, easy-to-use teeth whitening strips are applied twice a day for 14 days, dissolve within 15 minutes, and cause minimal sensitivity to reduce gum, cheek, or lip irritation.
Veronica Rockwitz, RDH, recently took the strips for a test run and found them easy to use and apply. Her primary goal was to get the stains above the veneer margin to disappear, and that’s what happened.
“I’ve tried other strips, but did not see the same results,” said Rockwitz. “As the strips dissolved, the hydrogen peroxide was able to get into those areas at the margins very well and not cause my tissues to turn white or cause sensitivity. So, for someone like me, I love the product for effectiveness and prevention.”
In addition to liking the convenience of the strips, she also appreciates the antimicrobial benefits of having the 10% hydrogen peroxide strips dissolving in the mouth.
Rockwitz believes the combination of convenience and health benefits will help encourage patient adherence. “The biggest barrier I come up against in the dental office is time,” she said. “My patients are busy people. If a whitening product is easy to use, fast on the uptake, and they see results quickly, patients will love it. Patients like options, especially ones that work and are affordable.”
Natural Elegance Premium Flow Nano Composite
Natural Elegance Premium Flow Nano Composite is a light-cured, high-radiopaque, resin-based flowable composite with enhanced properties. It meets a broad spectrum of applications, including Class III, IV, and V restorations, pit & fissure sealant, enamel defect repairs, repair for porcelain and/or veneer restorations, and restorations for minimally invasive cavities.
The material’s thixotropic properties make it suitable for use as a liner/base material that can be used in combination with a “packable composite.” It also contains fluoride to strengthen tooth material and reduce the occurrence of secondary caries.
This radiopaque composite matrix is 54% filled by weight (37% by volume) with an average particle size of 0.7 μm, providing restoration strength, wear resistance, and great polishability. The radiopacity, regardless of VITA color shade, is 200%, making the restoration very visible on radiographs.
