iLumi Sciences: Unmatched Light Transmission
Innovative and intelligent fiber post solutions that simplify restorative procedures for dentists around the world
iLumi Sciences got its start when it spun off from a fiber-optic company in 2011. Founded by glass and fiber-optic specialists, as well as medical and dental professionals, the small, privately held company develops and manufactures medical and dental products focused on root canal needs.
Based in northern Virginia, iLumi Sciences is built on core technology found in optical glass and fiber optics that has been refined and applied to dental products that require both light and radiopacity. The ultimate goal is to present innovative and intelligent fiber post solutions that simplify restorative procedures for dentists around the world. Here are a few key product offerings:
Super Fiber Posts
The patented new-generation iLumi Super Fiber Posts have true fiber-optic light transmission that distributes maximum light energy throughout the post, promising thorough polymerization and greater than 5X radiopacity for detailed x-ray visibility. The noncorrosive, biocompatible posts are manufactured in the United States and designed to transmit light all the way to the apex. “After learning about iLumi fiberoptic endodontic posts,” said Dr. David Kurtzman, “we decided to give them a try. They were everything that was promised: easy to use, well sized, and they gave a complete, thorough cure.”
“It surprised me how well it transmits light all the way down the apex. You can apply your preferred cement, whether it’s a resin or glass ionomer cement, with good polymerization.”
—John O. Burgess, DDS, ABGD
Super Fiber Post (Serrated)
In addition to all of the same features and characteristics of the original Super Fiber Post—unmatched light transmission, >5X radiopacity, >1,000 MPa flexural strength, and elasticity similar to dentin—Super Fiber Post (Serrated) is expertly notched to provide greater bonding strength in challenging endodontic scenarios.
Matching Drills
Both Super Fiber Post and Super Fiber Post (Serrated) are designed with color-coded stoppers that correspond with matching post drills. The surgical stainless-steel drills have semi-fl exible points, a latch-type connection, and are tapered specifically for use with fiber posts. Available in 4 sizes, the drills provide superior cutting action.
3 Criteria: Check!
The ideal fiber post must meet 3 key criteria to be both successful and reliable: It must transmit light to cure cement, provide good radiopacity to verify correct placement, and provide dentin-like elasticity so it will flex with the tooth under pressure. When John O. Burgess, DDS, ABGD, tested iLumi Sciences’ Super Fiber Post in his lab at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, as well as in his private practice, he discovered just that. “It surprised me how well it transmits light all the way down the apex,” said Dr. Burgess.
