SUSIE WORM, DMD

After earning a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene at the University of Nebraska’s College of Dentistry in 2002, Dr. Worm practiced hygiene for 6 years in the Lincoln area. She then decided to further her dental career, obtaining her doctorate of dental medicine from A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health (ASDOH) in 2012. While at ASDOH, she also acquired a certificate in public health with a dental emphasis. She then practiced as an associate dentist for a year, also serving as a part-time staff dentist at People’s Health Center in Lincoln and volunteer faculty member for the University of Nebraska’s College of Dentistry. Since 2014, she has operated her own dental practice, Canyon Echo Dental, in Lincoln.

It was on a trip to the Grand Canyon a decade ago that Dr. Susie Worm realized the perfect name for the dental practice she was opening with an initial team of just her and an assistant. “You get to the canyon and you’re just in awe because it goes on forever,” she recalled. “And there were these 2 little girls who were yelling into it, and you could hear it through the whole canyon. That’s when I decided to call my practice Canyon Echo Dental, because that’s what we wanted to do—be the small dental office that makes a big impact on people’s lives.”

When she opened her practice in Lincoln, NE, Dr. Worm was already a versatile presence in the dental field. She had worked as a hygienist for 6 years before acting on her passion for dentistry and returning to dental school. She served as an associate dentist before venturing out on her own. Having worked with a dental architect, she understood office flow and felt comfortable designing her practice.

However, one lesson she would learn the hard way was the importance of not only product durability but also buying from companies that provide lasting support. The manufacturer of her operatory equipment went out of business and, over time, the equipment began to fail, presenting unforeseen challenges. Fortunately, her distributor, Henry Schein, quickly found solutions to keep her up and running. “That made a big difference to us,” she said. “Now, when we look at equipment, we want to know who’s manufacturing it and whether they’re going to back us up, because things do happen.”

These were lessons to keep in mind as she set out to move Canyon Echo, now a team of 6, to a newly built office this year. One area taking center stage was the sterilization center, as Dr. Worm sought to replace aging equipment with more efficient, modern units—not too bulky or plasticky. “Our sterilization center will be on display, showcased behind clear glass, and everyone will walk by it, so I really wanted it to look nice,” she said.

After learning about the Maxima Power-Clean 210 Ultrasonic Cleaning Unit and the Maxima Turbo Class B Sterilizer from Henry Schein Products, she was intrigued.

“When you’re building an office and looking at equipment, everything is so expensive, but at one point the field sales consultant asked me, ‘Have you looked at these? These are a great price.’ So, of course that was the first thing that was appealing to me,” Dr. Worm said. “But another factor I wanted to consider was the warranty. It seems like everyone just has a 1-year warranty, so I liked the fact that these were 2 and 3 years.”

Powerful, Fast Cleaning

Any product that can help the office run more efficiently is a welcome addition, and Canyon Echo Dental has found that in the Maxima PowerClean 210 Ultrasonic Cleaner. Engineered for quick and powerful cleaning, the countertop system has a typical cleaning time of 5 minutes for 1 layer of loose instruments or cassette, or 10 minutes for 2 layers.

“What’s really nice is having that quicker option. My older unit only had the 1 option no matter the load size. So, I do love that if I only have 1 layer, I can do it in 5 minutes, which is just really quick,” she said.

In addition to an easy-to-read digital timer, the PowerClean 210 features a quiet operation, convenient drainage system, detachable lid with holder, and stainless-steel cleaning tank.

Finding its compact size appealing, Dr. Worm was also impressed with its material makeup and durability. Having experienced equipment failure that she attributed to shoddy craftsmanship, she researched the manufacturing of her new system. “This is really more robust,” she said. “Not only will it clean quicker, but I’m also confident it will hold up over time.”

High-Performance Sterilizer

Space-saving and stackable, the Maxima Turbo Class B Sterilizer features triple-vacuum technology that leaves instruments sterile and dry in 15 minutes. Designed for efficiency, the sterilizer fits up to 8 pouches per 15-minute cycle. An emergency sterilization mode allows users to sterilize unwrapped instruments for immediate use in 7 minutes.

Finding the unit easy to install and operate, Dr. Worm was impressed with its speed. “I feel like it’s much quicker than what I’ve used before. I also like that it shows on the face of it where it is in the running cycle,” she said.

She was similarly satisfied with the post-cycle dryness of the instruments.

“That’s important to prevent wicking, which can draw contaminants from the air,” she said. “It’s also important because if pouches are wet, they can rip, and you want to be able to store them properly. And some instruments can rust if they’re not properly dried, but this sterilizer has done a very good job and seems to have a nice, strong seal when you close it.”

Teaming Up for Infection Control

With a new chapter unfolding for Canyon Echo Dental, Dr. Worm is excited about the prospect of bringing enhanced efficiencies and reliable infection control to the newly constructed office space. She is optimistic the Maxima PowerClean 210 Ultrasonic Cleaner and Maxima Turbo Class B Sterilizer will power her instrument reprocessing workflows for the long term.

“They’re super easy to use and they can save time, and obviously they came at a great price point,” she said. “While the true value will be shown over time, I’m very happy with the materials of construction, especially when compared to other products I’ve used, so my initial evaluation is a positive impact and a better ROI.”
