Restore Without Fail

Early on in his career, Dr. Richard Young never could have imagined getting a front-row seat to some of the most groundbreaking discoveries in adhesive dentistry—yet that’s exactly what happened. The curtain opened back in 1986 when he was introduced to Kuraray Noritake's CLEARFIL Photo Bond—a new dual-cure dentin and enamel bonding agent.

“I started using it in my practice and total-etching dentin, essentially doing what we’d been told that we could not do in dental school—bond to dentin. No more calcium hydroxide or dentin liners—we just went in with CLEARFIL Photo Bond and there was zero sensitivity,” he said. “After that, I was sold. I went on to use CLEARFIL LINER BOND 2V, CLEARFIL SE PROTECT, and now CLEARFIL Universal Bond Quick.”

What Dr. Young was sold on was the first use of an adhesive monomer in dentistry. While other brands have since followed suit, Kuraray Noritake invented the MDP monomer, which creates an extremely effective chemical bond to enamel, dentin, metal alloys, and zirconia. Forty years later, MDP plays a key role in the popular CLEARFIL and PANAVIA product lines.

An expert in dental photography, Dr. Young now uses a variety of Kuraray adhesives, cements, and composites in his sought-after San Bernardino, CA, practice, but recalls spending the early days of his career doing fragment replacements with CLEARFIL Photo Bond and being an early adopter of PANAVIA EX, the first adhesive composite to use the MDP monomer. “My first deep margin elevation was done with PANAVIA and bonded amalgam in 1987, and I’ve used it to cement every indirect restoration ever since," he said.

 A Record of Success

While the Kuraray Noritake products he relies on today have certainly evolved over the years, Dr. Young said his approach to bonding over the past 3 decades hasn't. “If you look at what our goals were back then, they were exactly the same as they are today,” he said. “We learned years ago that if we bonded our indirect restorations with PANAVIA, we didn’t need to reduce as much tooth structure or prepare with mechanical retention."

The self-labeled “advanced adhesive dentist” says the reason he’s stuck with Kuraray Noritake products is simple: “My restorations have never failed because of the adhesives or restoratives. Kuraray Noritake is a pioneer in adhesive dentistry and has never produced a bad product in its history. Every one of them still works."
