Versamill: Where Accuracy Meets Training & Support

Backed by Axsys’ extensive training and support, the Versamill family of precision dental mills is designed to produce highly accurate restorations in both simple and complex cases

While it may seem like catching up to the current landscape of digital dentistry is an uphill battle—especially as more and more dentists are milling dentures, full-arch cases, and custom titanium abutments in the comfort of their own practices—fear not. Even if you’ve been on the sidelines watching the digital world roll by, there is always a path forward, especially when that path is lined with training and support.

Take it from Dr. Daniel Domingue, who 4 years ago started using the Versamill to produce single-implant restorations in-house. Fast-forward to today, where he is a frequent lecturer on digital dentistry, including chairside milling of complex full-arch cases. I

deal for both wet and dry milling, Versamill dental mills feature an open-architecture design with 5-axis simultaneous operation, vibration-free performance, and precision guides for accurate restorations. As the exclusive supplier of Versamill machines in the United States, Axsys Dental Solutions offers dentists award-winning training and support that helps them maximize their equipment and see a healthy return on investment.

“There is a learning curve, and that’s why you need the support from Axsys,” said Dr. Domingue, whose practice has an off-site lab with 3 Versamills. “As our practice grew, we moved our in-house lab off-site, which allowed us to take on other dentists’ cases and operate more like a commercial lab. That's what's great about the Versamill—it's priced appropriately where you could justify the cost just milling easy cases and single crowns, yet it’s powerful enough that it can be used in a commercial setting.”

Gain More Control

We may not be able to control whether or not our patients show up for their appointments, or whether or not they accept treatment, but once they do, we can choose the best way to provide it.

“The nice part of having an in-house mill is that it gives you more control over your restorations,” said Dr. Domingue. “Sometimes, you send a case to the lab, and they don’t get it right—either because of a lab error or because the dentist didn’t provide the lab with the correct information. But if that dentist had more control over the case, they could have orchestrated the final product based on the patient’s needs and wants, while also doing it faster.”

Most dentists would be hard pressed to find a patient who wouldn’t want their dental treatment completed faster and in fewer appointments. “When a patient comes in for a single crown, turnaround time would normally be 2 or 3 weeks just to get the product back," said Dr. Domingue. “I recently had a nun come into the office who was only in town for 2 days,” he recalled, adding that she broke her tooth the day she flew in. “I prepped her tooth for a crown and was able to cement it the very next day before she boarded her flight to another state for a speaking engagement," he said. "That never happens!"

While other milling units can do the same, said Dr. Domingue, most are exponentially more expensive than the Versamill. “My lab costs for a crown like that would have ranged from $200 to $300. Milling in-house means I can do the same thing for as little as $5 and as expensive as $35. And, if you’re not charging a nun, which I don’t, then it’s a no-brainer.”

Support to Write Home About

While many dentists are intrigued by the benefits of chairside milling, fear can get in the way of a worthwhile investment—whether it's fear over an insurmountable learning curve or lack of support to get the office up and running with the equipment.

“Versamill is a really, really nice machine for the price, and Axsys offers some of the best support on the market," said Dr. Domingue. "That’s important for dentists who are trying to break into digital dentistry and chairside milling. Issues may come up where the machine isn’t working properly, and being able to call Axsys and have them remote in to solve the problem is invaluable. They have amazing tech support for all their mills, and that’s key.”
