Versamill
Suitable for both wet and dry milling, Versamill dental mills feature an open architecture design with 5-axis simultaneous operation, vibration-free performance, and precision guides for accurate restorations
Similar to a ceramist who uses a pottery wheel to create a beautiful piece of art from a simple ball of clay, dental professionals use milling machines to turn blocks of material into their own works of art—lifelike dental restorations. To do this, they need a milling machine that meets their needs, and the Versamill family of precision dental mills—which includes the 5X-200, 5X-300, 5X-400, 5X-450, and 5X-500 models—has an option for everyone. Manufactured by Axsys Dental, Versamill units feature open architecture, a space-saving design, and 5-axis simultaneous operation, along with many other user-friendly features that improve the workflow and bottom line for dental labs and practices.
For dentists who prefer to offer patients sameday dentistry, the Versamill is an ideal solution, at least according to Dr. William Cartee Jr., who integrated the Versamill 5X-450 into his practice and can now “keep things in-house instead of having to send cases to outside lab.” He added that it also has decreased turnaround times for his cases.
Versatility
Each Versamill model is compatible with a variety of milling materials—including titanium, cobalt chrome, glass ceramics, composite, zirconium oxide, PMMA, PEEK, Pekkton, resin, and wax. “We love the ability to mill all types of materials with the machines we utilize in our lab,” Dr. Michael Gurney told DPS. Dr. Christopher Williams agreed that he can “mill any dental material” with his Versamill 5X-500, but he mostly mills lithium disilicate ceramics, glass ceramics, zirconia, and PMMA.
Calling his Versamill “high quality and versatile,” Dr. Gurney said, “It provides an enormous resource to our lab.” After searching for a more robust mill than the previous unit he had been using, lab technician Patrick Bever bought a Versamill 5X-300 and explained that “for about the same price point, the Versamill was far more robust. It just works better and lasts longer.” Dr. Bryan Kariya, who fabricates many full-arch restorations with his 5X-400 and 5X200 said, “The robustness of the materials that can be utilized with these mills is astounding.”
Features & Efficiency
Featuring a wide range of speeds, all mills in the Versamill family feature vibration-dampening construction and are suitable for both wet and dry milling. They also use precision guides, linear ways, and ball screws to provide an accurate final milled restoration. Dr. Joseph Amalifitano appreciates that his Versamill 5X-400 and 5X-200 are “solid, heavy machines with no vibration.” While Dr. Gurney, who owns a Versamill 5X-500, feels that “the definition of the final milled product could be improved.” Dr. Cartee Jr. said, “The 5X450 is extremely reliable and mills materials to perfection.”
All Versamill milling units are designed to boost the efficiency and productivity of a dental lab or practice, while simultaneously improving the quality of patient care. “We have been able to build a structure in our clinic where patients have greater access to ideal care due to these mills,” reported Dr. Kariya, who said he “has more control over the restorations being produced for patients” and “can provide services for patients at a significantly reduced fee.” While one dentist thought there was a “much bigger learning curve than initially anticipated” when integrating Versamill into his practice, he praised the quick turnaround time and said, “It has impacted our practice for the better.” Dr. Judson Wall disclosed that his Versamill 5X-400 increased the productivity of his practice by minimizing the work that had to be sent out to labs, and Dr. Ben Kellum said his 2 Versamill units “significantly lower our costs and help us give patients better quality treatment.”

Support from Axsys
With extensive in-house technical resources, Axsys is committed to providing superb customer support, which was confirmed by several evaluators. “The support from Axsys is out of this world! If we ever have questions, they are super accessible and willing to help us out,” noted Dr. Cartee Jr. Stating that “the service from Axsys is exceptional,” Dr. Kariya said, “They are fantastic at helping troubleshoot anything, which is crucial when implementing a new piece of equipment in-office.” When purchasing a milling unit, Bever shared, “Support was a huge factor for me. I purchased the Versamill from Axsys because I knew their support was second-to-none.” Dr. Kellum concluded, “Axsys has been the best and most supportive dental manufacturer I have worked with to date.”
Overall Satisfaction
“I am very happy with the Versamill,” shared Dr. Wall, and Dr. Kariya called it “a very robust, low maintenance piece of equipment that allows immense savings on lab fees.” Declaring that he wishes he had more of the mills, Dr. Kellum said, “Versamill completely changed the way I do dentistry. It has made dentistry more fun and helps me provide more comprehensive care at accessible pricing for my patients.” When asked if he would recommend the Versamill 5X-500 to colleagues, Dr. Gurney replied, “I think the price and ability is the best out there.
