DTX Studio Clinic 4.3 offers same-day surgical templates and elevates predictability, efficiency, and precision in the digital implant workflow

None of us would ever attempt to drive once the sun goes down without first flipping on the headlights. It’s also a fact that the first thing we reach for when the power goes out is a flashlight. It’s not even an option: we can’t see and it’s simply not safe. Katya Archambault, DMD, can paint a very similar picture by comparing the idea of practicing dentistry without CBCT. It’s akin, she said, to “practicing in the dark.”

In-House Surgical Templates

Incorporating cutting-edge CBCT images into dental workflows, however, goes hand in hand with using an innovative software system, and Dr. Archambault has found that DTX Studio Clinic 4.3, the newest dental imaging software from DEXIS, fits the bill. Packed with leading-edge enhancements and designed to provide advanced tools to plan and execute same-day, prosthetically driven implants, this latest software release adds a high level of predictability, efficiency, and precision to the digital implant workflow. Exhibit A? The software system offers surgical templates that can now be locally generated in less than 3 minutes and sent to a practice’s 3D printer for same-day delivery—with just a few clicks.

“It’s a very amazing feature because we no longer have to export our CBCT, DICOM, or STL files to a third party in order to design the template,” shared Dr. Archambault, who has been a beta tester for DTX Studio Clinic 4.3 for several months. “This latest version of DTX Studio Clinic has made a big difference in the efficiency of the process because we can—with just a few clicks and a few minutes—generate a surgical template, send it to our office printer, and produce it in-house. It’s a much less complicated and more simplified process, which adds predictability, efficiency, and precision to the digital implant workflow.”

This latest DTX Studio Clinic 4.3 feature now supports simultaneous planning for both jaws, while a template span is auto-preselected. A high-resolution template is available in an STL open format for local printing or sharing with a lab, can be stored in patient data, and is available on all workstations.

“Prior to this version of DTX Studio Clinic, we had to design our templates in another software or outsource to a CAD/CAM design service, which was time-consuming, inefficient, and expensive,” she explained. “This enhancement is intuitive and straight-forward. We can design and produce the STL files, send them to our printing machine, and very quickly get the template—all while the patient is sitting in the dental chair. The patients are thrilled because they can see the whole process on 1 screen. It’s definitely a game changer!”

Virtual Extraction

DTX Studio Clinic 4.3 also allows users to create circular inspection windows on the surgical template to assess the fi t. Additionally, the software upgrade offers the option of anchor pins; features a vertical height that can be modified between 0 and 7 mm; a custom label for identification purposes; an adjustable punch size for better access with a contra-angle handpiece; and a rotation marker on the template. Another upgrade from previous versions of the software is a virtual tooth extraction feature, which Dr. Archambault said pro-motes increased patient acceptance.

“Patients can see what’s going to happen on the screen, and combined with de-signing our own surgical template, it makes for a winning combination,” she shared.

Abutment Planning, Auto Bone Threshold

Also new with DTX Studio Clinic 4.3, abutments can be planned and visualized on top of implants in 3D, a feature that Dr. Archambault believes helps the patient understand the prosthetic part of the implant process. The Bone Threshold is now automatically defined, and the action can be adjusted with sliders instead of dragging—which allows users to make small adjustments to the thresholds more efficiently.

“This makes a dentist’s life easier, because it gives them a good assessment of the bone quality and density, and allows them to adapt their surgical protocol accordingly,” said Dr. Archambault.

SmartFocus Using MagicAssist

Additionally, DTX Studio Clinic 4.3 allows users to design 3D panoramic, tooth, and endo workspaces. The software also includes SmartFocus using MagicAssist, a DEXIS enhancement that uses Assisted Intelligence to automatically set up patient data, including image documentation, structure, nerve mapping, and other repetitive tasks. DTX Studio Clinic 4.3 also extends the capabilities of MagicAssist to small field-of-view scans.

“Now, we don’t have to adjust the field of view—you can skip the steps of identifying the teeth because MagicAssist does it all for you, very rapidly, even with a small field of view,” Dr. Archambault explained.

“These latest enhancements render the overall experience of using a CBCT and DTX Studio software to a level of ease that is amazing and makes the dental journey a lot more pleasant and efficient. And I believe it also gives patients a level of security that you are keeping up with the latest technology available.”
