There has been a steady increase in clinicians and patients opting for early, noninvasive management of dental diseases, including caries. That includes Dr. Rebecca Pounds, who frequently pairs artificial intelligence software with vVARDIS' Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus to treat her patients' early carious lesions. Below, she shares a recent case in which using this biomimetic, noninvasive treatment option led to truly remarkable results.

In my office, I review all radiographs with VideaAI. It aids in the detection of incipient carious lesions, which can then be treated with Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus (CRFP). If there's a chance to remineralize enamel instead of drilling and filling, I'll choose that option every time!

Quick, In-Office Procedure

The way this scenario plays out for my patients is that after radiographic assessment and AI interpretation, if I am able to diagnose an early carious lesion, I can treat it—often in the same appointment—with CRFP to remineralize it. We typically complete scaling and polishing prior to applying CRFP. After application, we keep the area isolated for the recommended waiting time, which is a great time to counsel the patient on good oral hygiene and proper diet. Upon being discharged, they are told not to eat or drink for 30 minutes.

When the patient returns for a recall and the x-ray reveals an improvement or the lesion has regressed, we show it to them to encourage continued oral hygiene maintenance and regular dental visits to treat any other incipient carious lesions with CRFP.

Case in Point

A good example of this process is a recent case in which a 32-year-old male patient was seen at my office for his 6-month recall appointment. At this visit, bitewing x-rays were taken and evaluated, and VideaAI aided in the diagnosis of 2 areas of incipient decay on the distal surfaces of teeth Nos. 13 and 20 (Figure 1). Both areas were treated with CRFP because the decay was still limited to the enamel. When the patient returned for his next 6-month recall visit, a bitewing x-ray showed that the areas had regressed and were not highlighted in VideaAI (Figure 2).

I am very excited to be able to offer this treatment to my patients, as I am seeing similar results in several other cases as well.
